Welcome to our PetRock Bandmate Spotlight series — where we pull back the curtain on the faces (and feathered hair) behind your favorite 70s tribute band. First up: the man with the golden pipes — JJ Cruise.
If you’ve been to a PetRock show (and if you haven’t… what are you doing with your life?), you’ve probably been blown away by the powerhouse vocals and smooth acoustic stylings of one Mr. JJ Cruise. He’s our resident fellow of finesse, delivering soulful 70s melodies with the kind of heart that makes polyester feel luxurious.
How It All Started
JJ’s journey into music kicked off thanks to a family heirloom — his grandfather’s drum set. “My dad brought it home, and I was instantly hooked,” he says. It didn’t hurt that his dad played in a family band with JJ’s grandparents. “My dad was — and still is — the coolest of them all. I mostly want to be like him.”
On Stage Favorites
JJ’s favorite PetRock moment on stage? “I LOVE doing Sara Smile,” he says. “I really dig the slow, melodic, and spacious love songs.” When he’s not melting hearts with Hall & Oates, he may or may not be secretly listening to Without You by Harry Nilsson or diving into the soft harmonies of Air Supply. (Don’t worry, JJ — your secret’s safe with the internet.)
Tools of the Trade
When it comes to gear, JJ trusts his Taylor acoustic guitars. “They sound great, play smoothly, and are super dependable,” he says. In other words, the perfect partner for a night of bringing back the hits.
Backstage Rituals and Favorite Gigs
“I’m habitually running behind,” he admits. “But getting better… right, Duke?” (We can confirm this is true, but we still love him.) As for favorite shows, one stands out: “Playing the Surf Ballroom was amazing!”
Dream Concert Moment
If he could go back in time to any 70s concert? “Led Zeppelin, no question. I’d love to witness the power of John Bonham.” Spoken like a true drummer at heart.
Final Thoughts
“It’s an absolute joy to be part of PetRock,” JJ says. “But this is also the hardest-working band I’ve ever been in. These musicians are incredibly dedicated and serious about what we do.” And that’s what makes it all groove so smoothly.
From heartfelt vocals to backstage laughs, JJ Cruise is a big part of what makes PetRock more than just a band.. Stay tuned… there’s more behind-the-scenes magic coming your way.
