The Cool Behind The Chords

In our continuing PetRock Bandmate Spotlight series, we turn our attention to Blitz Holiday — guitarist, keyboardist, vocalist, and soft rock savant.

The Early Days
Blitz’s musical roots go back to two very different places — the family living room and the church sanctuary.

“I was inspired by watching ‘60s British groups on television growing up,” he says. “But I also fell in love with the sound of the organ at church.” That unexpected combination — electric rock and spiritual resonance — led him first to the keyboard and organ, before eventually picking up the guitar and exploring other instruments.

That blend of grit and soul is something Blitz still brings to every PetRock performance.

A Chance Encounter
So, how did Blitz end up in PetRock? It’s a classic rock-and-roll story.

“I bumped into Duke one day in New York,” Blitz recalls. “He asked me if I wanted to play in a great band. I said yes.”

Just like that, a new chapter began. Blitz joined the band and brought a wave of musicality, energy, and experience that helped shape the PetRock sound you know today.

Favorites Onstage and Off
Out of all the songs on the setlist, Blitz has a particular fondness for one.

“I really enjoy playing ‘Reelin’ in the Years,’” he says. “The guitar parts are so neat.”

Offstage, his taste leans toward the sentimental. When asked what 70s song he secretly loves, he doesn’t hesitate:
“‘You Light Up My Life’ by Debbie Boone. Still makes me cry.”

We’ve all got one of those songs — the ones that sneak up on us, even after all these years.

Behind the Gear
Blitz’s guitar collection includes many Gibsons and Fenders, but his go-to is an old pink Stratocaster he lovingly refers to as Rose.

“She’s a good old gal and so reliable,” he says. “No matter the venue or the vibe, Rose never lets me down.”

In addition to his keyboard work and signature tones, Blitz’s setup is as versatile as his playing.

Pre-Show Rituals and Favorite Moments
Before stepping on stage, Blitz keeps things focused.

“I have to warm up my voice and run through the tricky licks for the night,” he says. “And I usually sip on a Cranton — a Vodka Cranberry without the vodka.”

As for his favorite PetRock memory? He goes back to his very first show with the band.

“It was at Wooly’s in Des Moines. The fans made me feel so welcome and a part of the group from the very beginning.”

If Time Travel Were an Option…
Blitz doesn’t hesitate when asked what 70s concert he’d go back to see.

“Air Supply, early on in one of their first tours,” he says. “I’d love to hear them again with fresh ears.”

Final Thoughts
Blitz keeps it humble and heartfelt.

“The Pebbles are the best,” he says. “And I always enjoy watching all of you from behind my aviator shades on stage.”

That combination of musicianship, connection, and cool makes Blitz such an essential part of PetRock — and a favorite among fans old and new.

Stay tuned for more bandmate spotlights in the weeks ahead.
