Percussion, rhythm, and a little bit of magic

This time in our Meet the Band series, we’re shining the spotlight on the heartbeat of PetRock: our percussionist, El Tiempo. From congas and bongos to shakers, bells, and everything in between, he brings a depth of rhythm that keeps the smooth grooves alive.

Where It All Began
El Tiempo’s love for music started early, rooted in family. His father and uncles played in a mariachi band, and it was their raw, melodic performances that first sparked his fascination. While others might have been captivated by the soaring vocals or strumming guitars, El Tiempo was drawn to the rhythms underneath.

At just four years old, he remembers sitting at a drum kit, stomping the kick pedal and striking the drums with borrowed sticks. By fifth grade, he had picked up the snare drum and never looked back.

Joining PetRock
El Tiempo’s path into PetRock wasn’t just about music — it was personal. “Steely Dana pulled me from one of my lowest points,” he recalls. “He said, ‘Join the Smooth Crew.’ And I did.” What started as a lifeline became a calling, and today, his rhythms form an essential part of the band’s sound.

On Stage Favorites
When asked about his favorite song to play live, he doesn’t hesitate: “You Can Do Magic by America.” For him, it’s more than just a tune. It’s a symbol of his journey with PetRock, a reminder that finding his place here has been nothing short of magical.

And while he’s open about his love for classic hits, one song he keeps close is Jefferson Airplane’s Miracles.

The Gear That Keeps the Groove
El Tiempo leans on trusted brands to shape his sound. Latin Percussion (LP) congas, bongos, cowbells, and shakers are his go-to instruments, paired with select pieces from Meinl that complement the LP tone beautifully. The combination lets him weave intricate textures into PetRock’s sets, always with precision and feel.

Rituals and Memories
Before shows, El Tiempo takes time to center himself. Hydration and a meditative state keep him locked into the groove and fully connected with both his bandmates and the energy of the crowd.

One of his most vivid memories with PetRock came during a 4th of July show in Okoboji, Iowa. “We blew the roof off the stage,” he says, smiling. “And as we tore down, we watched fireworks explode overhead. That was spectacular.”

Looking Back, Looking Ahead
If given the chance to time-travel, El Tiempo would go straight to Radio City Music Hall for Dark Side of the Moon. Nick Mason, Pink Floyd’s drummer, has been a heavy influence — psychedelic in nature, but smooth in execution.

As for life in PetRock today? El Tiempo sums it up best: “My journey here has been challenging, rewarding, and magical. The fans are the driving force behind what we do. You make the show what it is, with your energy and voices. We’ll keep showing up with the best versions of ourselves — so please do the same. Stay smooth, folks.”

yours,

Duke
